Time to sell my great Yamaha triple horn! It was played regularly for several years, but has not seen much use for the past few. It has always been owned and maintained by a professional. I just had it cleaned and adjusted by a repair shop, so everything functions great and it's ready to go! There are absolutely no dents or dings, and the valves and slides work perfectly. The valves are tight, quiet, and very fast!
I've played just about every brand of triple horn out there, and even owned 7 of them myself (crazy, I know), but this is the one I was happiest with and kept the longest. It plays great throughout the entire range, and all three sides are very usable. The intonation is even and predictable, and it blows very much like a double horn. I found it very easy to switch back and forth between my doubles and this triple. I used it mainly for really difficult 20th century chamber music, as well as early Classical and Baroque orchestral literature, and it never let me down. I've been doing different kinds of gigs the last couple of years, and this horn is far too good to just sit in my closet.
There used to be a great video on YouTube of Stefan Dohr playing the Schumann Konzertstuck on a Yamaha triple just like this, but it seems to be gone now. It was the one with Clevenger playing the 2nd horn part. Dohr sounded absolutely incredible on it! It was that video that made me finally give up on Schmid, Kuhn, and Paxman triples, and give the Yamaha triple a try. I tried 3 or 4 of them and eventually chose this one as the best all-around horn. It works especially well with a mouthpiece bore of #10 or larger, and is capable of projecting in a large orchestral setting, or blending in a woodwind quintet.
The bell was cut after purchase using an Alexander ring, so there are lots of compatible flares to try! I always used the flare from my Hill double, so that's why the patina on the original flare doesn't quite match the rest of the horn. The original flare is the one included with the horn, and it will develop a matching patina within a few months of use.
This horn is less than 1 pound heavier than a double, and it's balanced well in the hands so it's not very taxing to play for long periods. I've played many long concerts and operas on this horn with no problems, and I play off the leg. A Clebsch strap has been installed for extra support, the pinky hook is adjustable, and all the levers are very adjustable for different sized hands.
